Ruling NC, Congress playing 'friendly match' with PDP..?
Election for 8 MLC seats
2/19/2013 12:07:32 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 18: With National Conference (NC) and Congress fielding only three candidates each for the upcoming elections to eight seats in the Legislative Council, political observers view the political move like a "friendly match" with main opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP).
"Besides, PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's decision to give party mandate of Jammu Division to a Hindu face-Yashpal Sharma-from Poonch district also carries an imperative political message in Jammu region that too from the platform of PDP," were the observations of some of the political observers.
"The coalition Government's decision to contest just six out of eight seats in Legislative Council, which will get vacated in the first week of next month, conveys a significant political message that NC-Congress wants to give some space to the main opposition PDP. In other words, the coalition has given two MLC berths (one from Jammu Division and another from Kashmir Division) to PDP," opined political observers.
With BJP deciding not to field any candidate and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) opting to support the candidates fielded by PDP, the top brass of NC-Congress after calculating the political arithmetic unanimously came to conclusion to pass on two seats to PDP in the Legislative Council.
"Even if the NC-Congress coalition had contested all the eight seats, they knew it, PDP will win one seat each in both the divisions as the four BJP Legislators as well as its seven expelled MLAs have cleared of not contesting the Legislative Council election. So, the number game was very much in favour of PDP, at least for two seats, as three JKNPP Legislators too have extended their support in favour of PDP candidates," detailed political observers.
PDP's decision of delivering party mandate to Yashpal Sharma also carries a strong political message in Jammu Province. After Shri Amarnath land row issue of year 2008, PDP was severely attacked by Jammu based political groups that described PDP as Pro-Kashmir and anti-Jammu party. So to re-shape its image in Jammu region, PDP fielded Sharma, who has a secular and clean image among the common masses of Poonch district.
Another important reason to give party mandate to Yashpal Sharma was the elevation of NC leader Dr Shanaz Ganai to MLC. As Dr Shahnaz Ganai also belonged to Poonch district, so to counter NC in Poonch district, Mufti Sayeed played an important move in the political battlefield, which would end on March 7.
