As staffers smile in leisure, depositors queue up at cash deposit machine | Customers' agony, PNB's delight | | ET Report JAMMU, Nov 7: Punjab National Bank's latest tryst with technology has failed to catch the fancy of its customers as bank's directive to accept only cash above 30 thousand for manual deposit has not augured well with the depositors. The staff manning teller counters at Bank's Gandhinagar branch was sitting idle and people were waiting in queue at the Cash deposit machine to deposit cash in their account, as the branch is directing the account holders to deposit their cash less than Rs. 30,000 in the cash deposit machine installed in a dirty room outside the branch. "I had to deposit Rs. 7500 in my account, when I filled a pay-in-slip and gave it along with cash at the counter, the cashier refused to deposit the money and asked me to deposit it in the machine," said Kasturi Lal, 52, a laborer by profession. "We are not familiar to the machines, as we don't know anything about computers and after waiting in the long queue, when I asked the bank employee to help me, he again asked me to deposit cash at the cash counter as I had the denomination of Rs. 100 and there were 75 notes and the machine accepts only 40 notes at one time," he added. There were many people who cannot operate that cash deposit machine and the cashier refused to accept the amount less than Rs. 30,000. The irony is that the bank claims that it is getting hi-tech and providing advance facility to their account holders, but most of the transactions were unsuccessful in the cash deposit machine. Arun Sharma (Name Changed) an account holder of PNB, Gandhi Nagar said, 'I deposited Rs. 7000 in my saving account after waiting for 15 minutes in the queue, but finally, when the receipt came out of the machine, the transaction status was unsuccessful." "When I contacted the Chief Manager, he said it will be deposited manually in your account in the evening, If they have to do it manually, why don't they deposit the cash at the counter during working hours," he added. Showkat Ahmed, Chief Manager PNB Gandhi Nagar when contacted said, "We have got directions from the higher authorities to make clients familiar with the machine and we are helping our clients to learn basic banking operation through these machines". |
