In merely 4 months, Taj's 'sophisticated mechanized cleaning machines turn into showpieces | GMC sanitation in jeopardy | | Avinash Azad JAMMU, Nov 7: Procured with much hype, Sophisticated Mechanized Cleaning and Sweeping machines worth lakhs, which were procured on the recommendations of Medical Education Minister, Taj Mohi-ud-Din for better sanitation at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) have been reduced into showpieces just four months after they were inaugurated with much fanfare. It was March 28, 2013 when the Taj Mohi-ud-Din inaugurated sophisticated Italy made mechanized cleaning and sweeping machines. Having a speed of cleaning about 20,000 square feet an hour and they were expected to clean the entire hospital within few hours; but the initiative has nose-dived with machines falling defunct. Well placed sources at GMC&H informed Early Times that three out of four Machines turned redundant. "About 10 machines were procured by the Health and Medical Education Department (H&MED) for GMC&H and its associated hospitals. Italy made machines were expected to streamline the derailed sanitation system of the GMC&H, but they failed to live to their hype," said an official source. "Engagement of NGOs for sanitation purposes in the hospitals had already proved futile", he said, adding that instead of strengthening its own existing sanitation wing the administration has been seeking outsourcing for the purpose. "Former Principal, GMC&H Dr Rajinder Singh in March 2012, had outsourced the sanitation to an NGO on trial basis for three months", sources said, adding that owing to inadequate numbers of men and machinery, the NGO could not meet hospital's requirements. Following the failure of said machines, the GMC management on November 6 flouted tenders for outsourcing for hospital sanitation once again. |
