| NC up for embarrassment in Mendhar | | Party MLC could join opposition PDP | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb2: The ruling National Conference is likely to face worse political embarrassment in Peer Panjal region in the coming days as some big shots of the party are ready to join the opposition People’s Democratic Party, however, the move may equally destabilize the main opposition also because its cadres could resent such a jump over the fence. If reliable sources are to be believed senior NC leader from the region and sitting legislator holding a constitutional position is all set to join opposition PDP. Sources said Javed Rana of National Conference may soon join PDP but the PDP cadres would revolt the decision which would be equally embarrassing for that party too.
Sources said the former VC of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University and elder brother of Rana, Choudary Masood and the chief spokesperson of PDP, Naeem Akhtrar have personal acquaintances and both have worked out the modalities joining of Rana. They said though the local leadership of PDP from Mendhar constituency in Poonch district would revolt against any such decision, however, Akhtar has reportedly prevailed upon the party leadership, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti to get Rana into the party fold.
Sources said senior PDP leader and MLA Mendhar, Sardar Rafique Hussain Khan, Advocate Mehroof and other local leaders would revolt against any such move which will be quite embarrassing for the party.
Sources said Rana's joining PDP would be troublesome for both the regional parties as NC may be left without choice and at the same time his joining would cause ripples in PDP. And it would be the congress party which would emerge as the only beneficiary of the situation. Sources said that Rafiq Hussain Khan and Advocate Mehroof who enjoy the support of the majority Pahari community in Mendhar would react to any such decision very sharply and even both
quitting the party cannot be ruled out.
Sources further averred that if Javed Rana joins PDP, senior political leader and former minister, Nisar Ahmad Khan would be the only choice for National Conference in Mendhar. Sources, however, added that many leaders have abandoned NC during the past in the region and if Rana leaves that party, NC would be faceless in Mendhar. They said the changing loyalties in Mendhar are likely to change political demography in Poonch.
