Oblivious of each other two agencies take up same project | Anarchism rules Tourism Deptt | | Arun Singh Jammu, Apr 10: Lack of planning and coordination between various arms of Tourism Department Jammu can be gauged from the fact that it is executing two similar projects on the same piece of land which was sanctioned for its first project for the construction of Lakhanpur Travelers Mart. Sources told Early Times that in order to create better infrastructure to give boost to the tourism in the state, a project for the construction of Lakhanpur Travelers Mart comprising of building for boarding and lodging of tourists was sanctioned during 2005-06 under Lakhanpur-Basohli-Bani Sarthal circuit at a sanctioned cost of Rs 4.99 crore on 114.18 kanals of land acquired at Lakhanpur for this purpose. They further said that due to illegal encroachment on the land the project could not be taken up for more than six years but after redemption of land by the local administration the project was taken up in August 2012 by the Tourism Department. Interestingly, later Lakhanpur-Sarthal Development Authority also got sanctioned another similar project titled "Construction of budgeted accommodation and other tourist infrastructure" in February 2012 at an estimated cost of Rs 4.31 crore and the Tourism Department started execution of works on the same piece of land acquired for construction of Travelers' Mart 'without ascertaining requirement and assessment'. They said that both the projects had similar components like bed rooms, suit rooms, kitchen, lobby, dining hall etc and the work on the projects is still underway. The construction of two buildings at same place without ascertaining the requirement and impact assessment is indicative of lack of planning and coordination among different executing agencies of the Department as well as poor internal control mechanism.
