In a change of heart, Mohammad Yousuf Bhat decides to fight Assembly elections from Ganderbal | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Apr 10: After threatening to spill beans about the mysterious death of National Conference senior worker, Haji Yousuf, National Conference leader, Mohammad Yousuf Bhat has made up his mind to fight the next Assembly elections from the high profile Ganderbal constituency in Central Kashmir. Sources told that Yousuf has dropped his earlier plan to fight the Parliamentary elections from Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat and instead he would try his luck in the Assembly elections slated later this year. His decision has come up as a surprise to the National Conference leaders since he worked tirelessly for the party in the entire Ganderbal district. "Yousuf has received feedback from his party workers, friends and well wishers to fight the Assembly elections and not the Parliamentary elections. They want him to devote maximum time to mobilize support from the electorate since he is known to the people of the district more so to those who are very close to National Conference," said sources. Sources said that Yousuf had played a pivotal role in the victory of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah from Ganderbal constituency in 2008 Assembly elections. They said that his decision to fight the Assembly elections this time around is all set to upset the plans of National Conference for the Ganderbal constituency. It would be in place to mention here that Yousuf has already announced his resignation from National Conference. Yousuf, a key witness to the death of Haji Yousuf is the second important leader from Ganderbal to raise revolt against the party leadership. Earlier, Sheikh Ghulam Ahmad Saloora resigned from the party and since then he has formed his own party by the name of Awami Insaaf Party. "National Conference leaders like Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah owe their success from the Ganderbal constituency to the hard work put in by leaders like Saloora and Yousuf. Since these people have parted ways with party it is bound to affect the future of the NC from Ganderbal constituency, despite the fact that the constituency is high profile and very important for the party," said sources. Sources said that it is due to the parting away of these leaders that Omar has almost made up his mind not to fight the Assembly elections from the Ganderbal constituency. They said although a final decision has not been taken as yet, but it is quite likely that Omar will fight the next Assembly elections from Sonwar constituency. "Due to the support enjoyed by Yousuf in the Ganderbal district it is quite possible that the vote share of Dr. Abdullah for the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat in this particular area may come down. Who knows this may have a bearing on the final result of this seat once the final results are out," said sources. Pertinent to mention that Yousuf has also threatened to spill beans about the mysterious death of Haji Yousuf. He had also accused the National Conference of rigging the 1987 elections and even went to the extent of saying that Dr. Abdullah was losing from Ganderbal elections but was declared winner after the party resorted to large scale rigging. Haji Yousuf died in mysterious circumstances during the intervening night of September 29 and 30 after being summoned by Omar at his residence. Yousuf's family members alleged that he died due to the torture meted out by National Conference leaders and the personal security staff of Omar. However, police and state Government maintained that he died due to cardiac arrest. Opposition People’s Democratic Party also blamed the state Government for Yousuf's mysterious death. Following the incident the state Government ordered for the attachment of DySP Shabir Ahmad, Personal Security Officer, Chief Minister. Shabir was also sent to the Kulgam district as DySP. |
