Jinnahs continue to question Modi's visit to J&K | Seeking to achieve the unachievable | | Neha
JAMMU, July 10: Even after six day, Jinnahs in the Valley continue to question the Narendra Modi's maiden visit to Jammu & Kashmir. Modi visited the state on July 4 to flag off the inaugural train from Katra to Delhi and inaugurate power project at Uri. His visit had not gone down well with the fanatics or Jinnahs in Kashmir for obvious reasons, the most important being the conspicuous absence of any reference in his addresses to the so-called Kashmir issue and his holistic approach towards the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. If on the one hand, the self-styled freedom fighters and Pakistani agents in the Valley rejected Modi's visit as meaningless and said the Kashmir problem was "political and human problem" that cannot be addressed by developmental packages, on the other hand, the so-called champions of Jammu & Kashmir's secession from India in the so-called Kashmiri civil society dismissed Modi's visit to the state as a visit to promote Indianess in Jammu & Kashmir and ensure full control of New Delhi over the state's precious waters and power projects. Only the other day, an ardent champion of the state's separation from India came out with a big communal essay to register protest against Modi on behalf of Kashmiri people (in this case Kashmiri leaders of all hues). He bemoaned the Modi's "complete silence about Kashmir's basic political problem" and said Modi simply "stuck to the agenda he had been advancing during his election campaign". "On his first visit to the state he revealed his mindset through his three gestures. The first was the affirmation of his creed through a visit to the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishnovdevi Ji where he flagged off the first train from Katra to Delhi. According to him, this step has thrown open the Shrine to 123 crore Indians? Thereby, he too has confirmed the obsession of many Indian leaders to look for a Hindu connection of Kashmir to Hindu India! All of them seem to be uncomfortable in accepting the Muslim majority character of the state even though the locals do not practice the extremist variety of Islam, the religion of peace. Some had even speculated that to strike a balance he would visit a Sufi Shrine also. However, one would be naïve to expect this from a person who refused to wear a Muslim skull cap during his election campaign! The second gesture during his visit was to inaugurate the Uri-II power project. His power minister declared that this project would supply power to north India! NHPC (National Hydro-electric Power Corporation of India) which is managing the power house has been nicknamed in Kashmir as the East India Company as it has been robbing Kashmir of its most precious resource, the hydro-electric power potential. The corporation has grown to a colossal set up with thousands of crores of profit from the power houses set up by it in Kashmir. He affirmed that there would be more 'Exploitation' of the resource. The so-called mainstream political leaders, especially belonging to Abdullah dynasty, have been a party in allowing NHPC to rob Kashmiris of their precious resource. It is a tragedy that in spite of the massive potential Kashmiris face a perennial power famine thanks to its corrupt mainstream leaders! Instead of sympathizing with Kashmiris for this injustice and promising to correct it, he (Union Power Minister) affirmed his faith in the doings of the East India Company and their future programmes," he said while criticizing the Prime Minister and Union power Minister. This ardent believer in the concept of pernicious two-nation concept, like all other separatists in the Valley, also didn't like the Prime Minister's short visit to Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar. "Finally, he (Modi) bestowed his full blessings on the Army whom he addressed in the Badami Bagh Cantonment, a relic of the erstwhile Dogra rule. He not only paid homage to the martyrs but promised the soldiers the newest and the most modern weapons knowing fully well the gulf between the common Kashmiris and the Army because of the happenings of last two decades. There has been a continuous demand from all quarters to lessen the presence of Army and other Security Forces in civilian areas and also to revoke the notorious legislation of AFSPA giving unbridled powers and total immunity to soldiers in their actions against the civilian population. Not a word about it," he said. The bottom line of his whole communal essay was that Modi didn't appreciate the separatist urges of the Kashmiri leadership and that he, instead of recognizing the ground realities in Kashmir, only sought to further Indianize Jammu & Kashmir and further consolidate New Delhi's hold over the state's natural resources. In other words, he condemned the Prime Minister's visit to the state and vouched for independence. He, it appears, like other fanatics in the Valley, doesn't realize that Kashmir is not the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. He must remember that Kashmir constitutes only one-tenth of the entire state and that Jammu and Ladakh, besides the Kashmiri Hindus and many other religious and ethnic minorities in the state, are not part of the ongoing sectarian movement in certain parts of the Valley, especially parts of Srinagar city. He is simply striving to achieve the unac-hievable. He should remember that the times have changed with the destruction of the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre and decimation of the NC-Congress coalition in the state and that new regime at the centre is committed to bridging the existing constitutional bridge in stages, if not at once. |
