KUPWARA, July 10: Revenue department in Handwara tehsil in north Kashmir's Kupwara district seems to be in deep slumber as a huge chunk of land has been permanently grabbed by some locals.
According to sources, permanent constructions have been raised on around 27 kanals of land at Hurdoona, Tarathpora in Handwara tehsil, the land is a property of Revenue Department. "Land was open after a building of one section of Revenue Department (Patwari Khana) was gutted in blaze several years ago. Unfortunately the department has failed to keep an eye on its land and left it for encroachment," sources said.
Local resident of Hurdoona wishing not to be named said that, "Despite being aware of the fact of increasing encroachment on the Government's land, the Revenue Department or officials concerned seemed to be in a deep slumber or not willing to take any action against the encroachers in north Kashmir's frontier district Kupwara.
"If official sources are to be believed, then there is a nexus operating between some senior officials of the Revenue Department and land mafias. Sources further revealed that the land mafias pay huge money to encroach upon Government land, that's why the department is not willing to take any action against them" source said.
Another source said that, "three houses have been completely built while construction on two more houses is in progress. He accused that officials have failed to take any legal action against the land grabbers to evacuate the said land. Social activist Fayaz Ahmad Dar accused the officials of Revenue Department for closing their eyes deliberately as they are not taking any action against land grabbers which remains a far dream for common masses.
Legal action would be taken against all the encroachers and not even a single land grabber would be allowed to go scot-free Dar said. However, Early Times came to know from another source that a committee would be constituted shortly to look into the matter and to prepare a detailed report about the names of encroachers.
"A total of 27 hectares of forest land has been encroached upon till June and most of these cases have been recorded in Handwara forest vicinity alone," they said. Meanwhile same is the case in Kehmil and Langate forest divisions of the district, where encroachments are going unabated. According to sources that, "The worst hit areas in these two divisions are, Zurhama, Awoora, Kachama, Kralpora, Marsri, Ramhal, Rajwar belt, Mawar and upper areas of Langate. In both these forest divisions more than 70 hectares of forest land has been grabbed by locals," source added.
