A state that produces electricity has 1258 un-electrified villages | | | Avinash Azad
Jammu, May 10: Notwithstanding generation of about 2000 MWs of electricity production in four districts Reasi, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar around six hundred villages of these districts are un-electrified. Moreover, nine districts of Jammu division have 809 while eight districts of Kashmir division have 349 un-electrified villages. According to official documents with Early Times, there are 1258 villages of 17 districts of state yet to be electrified. "Nine districts of Jammu division having 809 un-electrified villages, while 349 villages in eight districts of Kashmir division are also un-electrified", the documents revealed, adding that in the list of un-electrified villages district Doda top with 389 villages. "In Jammu division, four districts where hydro electricity is being produced 591 un-electrified villages, while Poonch district of Jammu division stands number two position having 153 un-electrified villages", the documents maintained. However, another five district including Samba in Jammu and Kulgam, Shopian, Leh and Kargil in Kashmir districts have also a number of un-electrified villages. Pertinent to mention that a comprehensive programme namely Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) was launched by the Government of India in 2005 to achieve the goals of national rural electrification policy to provide access to electricity to all rural households. Under RGGVY scheme, 90 percent capital subsidy is provided by the Central Government for overall cost of the project. Exploring, other sources of energy, the state government has given responsibility of electrification of un-electrified villages to Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency to install solar energy system in remote un-electrified villages. "The JAKDEA had provided solar lights in 50 villages of erstwhile Doda district and almost similar numbers of villages had been electrified in Gurez valley of Kashmir division", sources said, adding that a large number households of remaining 1258 villages of 17 districts have been waiting for solar lights since these villages were brought under RGGVY. |
