Tampers records, forces people to sell land for peanuts | Land mafia runs revenue office at Shivpora | | Muhammad Mukaram
SRINAGAR, July 22: The land mafia is on prowl and hand in glove with the revenue officials at Shivpora, one of the prized locations in the summer capital of the state. The mafia operating in the Shivpora locality and its adjoining areas are enjoying the patronage of ministers and higher officials. A group of residents told Early Times that Abdul Raheem Baba, the "kingpin" of the mafia, harasses the poor land owners and compels them to sell the land for peanuts. "He is the virtual Patwari of our area. Every time you visit the local office of the revenue officials you will find him sitting besides the Patwari and the Girdawar. Not only this he carries the official documents with him," said the group. The locals said that Baba has become a nuisance for all the residents. They termed him as a rumour mill that pits people against each other. He is creating mistrust among the locals for his pity interests, they said. A local Mohammad Shabaan said that the kingpin along with concerned Girdawar is involved in many fraudulent and shabby deals in the locality besides the other adjoining areas. He said Baba is a miscreant and is involved in creating mistrust among locals by misleading them by indulging in their personal matters. "Baba was also hand in glove with the previous Patwari who was charge sheeted by the crime branch. He has grabbed many kanals of Khacharai (government land) in Rose Colony area of the same locality worth crores of rupees," said locals. "The area is rapidly developing as residential colony and many structures are coming up in the area. We had plans to make a representation to concerned district development officers to as a recreational park, but it has now been grabbed by this land shark," the locals said. Early Times has learnt that an FIR has been lodged by state vigilance organization against former Patwari, Javed Ahmad, who according to locals worked in connivance with Baba. The former Patwari was caught red handed with money which he demanded from a person two years ago. The locals also said that Baba was handin glove with that Patwari also. Baba the locals allege can be often seen fiddling with revenue records at Patwar office located at Batwara here. "We appeal Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Revenue Minister, Aijaz Ahmad Khan to look into the matter. We appeal the government to book miscreant Baba so that we would live peacefully," locals said. The locals also alleged that Baba has hired many unemployed youth of the area to carry his 'nefarious' and 'ill' designs by exploiting their raw age. |
