To cross examine witnesses in Kishtwar violence, Justice Gandhi reaches town | | | Asif Iqbal Naik KISHTWAR, July 22: Retired Justice RC Gandhi, appointed by the Government to probe into the August 9, 2013, Kishtwar violence that had claimed the lives of three persons and led to the burning down of public and Government properties once again reached Kishtwar along with other officials to examine the witnesses and other persons before submitting the final report to the Government as per the deadline fixed by the Supreme Court of India. Justice Gandhi in his last leg of Kishtwar tour issued fresh summons to nearly 100 people who submitted their affidavits to the Commission. However, only a few people among those summoned by the commission turned up at TRC, Kishtwar, for re-examination. This is the first tour of Justice Gandhi to Kishtwar after he gave clean chit to Minister of State for Home on December 21, last year in his interim report followed by his re-induction in Omar Abdullah's Council of Ministers next day. As per the reports, Justice Gandhi is busy in giving the final touch to his report and is likely to submit it any time next month in a stipulated time frame fixed by Supreme Court. Sources said that the report was almost complete and added that before submitting his final report, Justice Gandhi wants to have a re-look into certain things which he mentioned in his report. It is pertinent to mention here that on August 23, 2013 Government had appointed Justice Gandhi to enquire into the August 9 communal clashes and subsequent incidents of violence in Kishtwar in one month, but on 27th of September 2013 Government of Jammu and Kashmir gave extension to the commission to probe the Kishtwar violence which expires today. The Government order further reads that the Commission will also enquire into the circumstances which led to the violence and arson and the consequent loss of life and property in District Kishtwar and also the administrative lapses, if any, while handling the situation. Justice Gandhi in his inquiry report will also fix the responsibility of the persons, involved in acts of violence, arson and the loss of life and property. Gandhi in his interim report held police and administration guilty of dereliction of duty and even suggested absorption of Muslim youth in VDCs. |
