Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 12: The second round of fresh talks between Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) over the formation of government in the state has been deferred to Tuesday as the same could not be held today.
Sources told Early Times that as Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley was not available the meeting between the PDP and BJP leaders could not be held in the union capital today. The meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday wherein the broader contours of government formation would be discussed.
"The second round meeting between PDP and BJP leaders could not be held today. The first round meeting was held on Sunday and both the sides talked on various possibilities of government formation. Since the union finance minister was not available the meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday," said sources.
Sources said that the BJP side would be represented by party's national general secretary, Ram Madhav and Arun Jaitley. The PDP side would be represented by MLA Rajpora, Haseeb Drabu. Drabu has of late assumed the role of a mediator between the two sides and his role is being seen as important in the overall formation of likely PDP-BJP government in the state. On Sunday Drabu met the BJP President Amit Shah and Ram Madhav.
"The BJP is ready to accept PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the chief minister of the state for the whole term of six years but with a rider. The BJP has said that their man should be the deputy chief minister of the state for six years. As such there are chances that the demand of rotational chief minister as put by BJP would take a back-seat," said sources.
Sources said that PDP Patron has made it clear that he would talk to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi for the government formation and no other leader of the present BJP set up. But before this it is quite possible that all the finer details for the government formation would be discussed thoroughly and 'deal' would be struck.
"For the time being Mufti has authorized Drabu to talk to the BJP leaders and Naeem Akhtar the spokesman of the party has been asked to issue statements. The other leaders of the party are not authorized to talk on the issue and they have been asked to keep quiet. Most of the party legislators are unaware about the future strategy as the party Patron is keeping the cards close to his chest," said sources.
PDP has emerged as the largest party in the state after the recent assembly elections with 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 seats. National Conference has 15 legislators in the new assembly with Congress winning 12 seats in the elections. Independents and others have managed to win seven seats.
Although both NC and Congress offered their support to PDP for forming the next government in the state, the latter has so far kept mum over the proposals. PDP and BJP leaders carried out some rounds of informal talks in the recent past, but of late there has been a deadlock leading to delay in the formation of government in the state.
