Separatists threaten agitation over refugee issue | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 12: Threatening agitation, separatists from all hues have urged the government of India to desist from granting state subject status to the West Pakistan refugees. The separatists believe that the move is aimed at changing the demographic complexion of the state. A parliamentary committee has recommended rehabilitation of the refugees. The rehabilitation includes grant of state subject status, voting rights and employment in government and semi-government departments. Chairman Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Yaseen Malik has called for protests over the intended move saying `It was a conspiracy to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir and turn Muslim majority into minority which is totally unacceptable.' Malik added that the conspiracies hatched at the behest of RSS and its allies will be challenged, refugees from West Pakistan are not part of Jammu and Kashmir and will never be.' He said that JKLF will hold protests sit-ins against the plans to settle these refugees in the state. "This is not the first time when New Delhi has resorted to such machinations. The Indian leadership has been trying it since 1947." Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani while criticizing the regional parties over the issue said that one party had asked New Delhi not to take hasty decisions over the settlement of West Pakistan refugees in the state. He said that instead of adopting clear stand over this issue, regional parties have advised the Narendra Modi government not to take any hasty decision regarding this issue because it can have serious consequences. Accusing BJP of changing the demography of Jammu and Kashmir, Geelani said that new 'communal' government of India has made plans to change the demography and the Muslim identity of the state and instead of resisting it, the local pro-Indian parties have adopted apologetic attitude. He said granting state subject status and voting rights to the refugees is a long pending agenda of the RSS. Pertinently National Conference (NC) has already voiced its concern and are on the same page with Malik and Geelani over the issue. |
