Savior of hundreds caught in floods facing starvation | Administration extends a cold shoulder | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 26: A benevolent young man who sacrificed his livelihood to buoy hundreds caught in unprecedented floods in Srinagar last September to safety is facing starvation and administration has turned a cold shoulder to the selfless savior. Details available with Early Times reveal that one Nayeem Ahmad Khuroo (26), an entrepreneur from Naikbagh, Nowgam Srinagar who dealt in foam mattresses gave away all his stocks during recent floods in Kashmir as they were used by the local volunteers to rescue people from the floods. Volunteers took out his stocks of foam mattresses which floated in the waters and these mattresses were put to use by them in Naik Bagh area and other places across Srinagar to rescue more than 300 people from the floods. Nayeem offered his stocks comprising foam mattresses (which could float) and timber (wooden planks) as there was hue and cry in the area , but during this process more and more people kept coming to his shop and took away some 400 mattresses. Nayeem Ahmad, once owner of Star Wood Dealers & Nandini Mattresses Naik Bagh Nowgam who sacrificed everything he had to facilitate evacuation of stranded people is facing starvation along with his family as he had not insured his business unit. "My business was the only sustenance for my family that includes my five unmarried sisters" said Nayeem. " I thought that Govt will compensate me but it is more than three months since I submitted my documents before DC Srinagar , but till date I haven't been compensated. Even the DC Srinagar recommended my case to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir , but the case is still pending there and I am starving " he added. "As people were crying for help, I along with ten volunteers from Wathora and Kralpora area jumped into the flood water to reach out to the trapped people at Naik Bagh, Nowgam. After finding the mattresses in his warehouse, we used them as boats to rescue trapped people. We appeal Government to come to his recue now as his foam mattresses and wooden planks proved very much helpful during rescue work " said Mohammad Ayaz from Wathoora Budgam. "I now appeal Governor N N Vohra , Principal Secretary to Govt Dr Asgar Samoon and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to come to my recue. I have lost each and everything just to ensure safety of people and if I am not helped by the Govt , in future nobody will come forward during such natural disasters " said Nayeem Ahmad. |
