Former DGP probed his involvement in recruitment scam, indicted him | Tainted police officer bags Sher-e-Kashmir police medal | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 27: One of the tainted Police officers who was recently given Sher-e-Kashmir police medal for "meritorious and gallantry service" has remained in the news for wrong reasons. The officer who bagged the prestigious medal on the occasion of Republic Day was indicted and found guilty in Anantnag recruitment scam and even remained suspended from 11.8.1998 to 17.6.1999 i.e. 2 months less than One year. Dr Ashok Bhan, the then IGP Armed (who retired as DGP)- one of the most competent and honest officers of J&K Police was entrusted the inquiry. Pertinently, in 1998 the Police recruitment Board headed the police officer in question had made certain recruitment of constables in district Anantnag. There was a hue and cry raised, that the recruitment had been made in violation of the norms and allegations of bribery and favoritism were made against the officer and his subordinates. The then DGP of J&K Gurbachan Jagat had ordered an inquiry into these massive complaints and allegations of corruption and favouritism against the accused officer vide PHQ UO No APPTT/26536-37 dated July 14,1998. The said inquiry was entrusted to Dr Ashok Bhan then IGP Armed Police J&K. In his inquiry report Bhan had indicted and found guilty the Recruitment Board headed by the officer and his subordinate. Bhan submitted a confidential Inquiry Report to the then DGP Gurbachan Jagat vide no. APHQ/CB/Enq/98-636 dated July 24,1998 and gave the findings against these officers. The Inquiry Officer had found that there have been bunglings, mutilations and tampering in the registers and the list. He found during the inquiry that the meritorious had been ignored and the less meritorious selected. Sources told Early Times ousted National Conference-Congress regime ignored all these facts and awarded the official in question with plum postings. "The misdoings of the official are recorded in his service book but previous regime ignored all the aspects and want out of way to favour him," they added. Surprisingly, the name of the said official recently figured in the list of honest and upright officers of the police department and he was awarded the prestigious Sher-e-Kashmir police medal for "meritorious and gallantry service." Sources said that name of a corrupt official appearing along with the officers with clean image has disappointed the upright officers in the police department. "How can a person with doubtful credentials be given a prestigious medal that too for meritorious and gallantry services?" questioned an official. Sources said that some of the officials were of the opinion that this year Sher-e-Kashmir Police medal has lost sheen due to the tainted official being among the awardees. "Government should formulate a policy for award winners. No official who is found involved in any scam or is tainted should be considered for any of the awards given by the centre and state governments," sources added. |
