Officer who won Military Medal on R-Day got killed in J&K encounter | | | Javaid Naikoo

Srinagar, Jan 27 : A commanding officer, who had only yesterday won a military medal, was today killed along with a policeman while battling a group of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. Two local militants were killed; an Army colonel and one Policeman lost their lives during a daylong gun battle in South Kashmir's volatile Tral area. According to the details received, two top brass militants of Hizbul- Mujahideen militant outfit who were identified by locals as Adil Ahamd and Sheeraz Ahmed Bhat, both residents of Tral were killed in Tral area of District Pulwama today after an encounter broke out early in the morning between militants and security forces following the inputs about the presence of militants was received by security forces. Sources said that one clonel of Army namely MN Rai and a policeman also lost their lives during a daylong gun battle between Security forces and militants who received severe injuries initially and late succumbed in hospital. Sources said that two policeman including Sanjeev Kumar and the commanding officer of army's 42 Rashtriya Rifles Colonel M N Rai were initially injured in the initial round of firing, later when they were shifted to the hospital Doctors declared them brought dead while as another policeman of special operation group received minor injuries in the incident. Police sources said a joint team of 42 and 3 RR along with a team of Jammu and Kashmir Police received a tip off about the presence of militants in Hundoora village of Tral cordoned off the area where the insurgents were hiding and on challenging militants opened fire onsecurity triggering an encounter which ended in the killing of both militants, however one Colonel and a policeman also lost their lives during the gun battle. Police sources said that both militants were wanted in carrying out many anti india activities and were active in the area from last three years and added that weapons and some ammunition was recovered from the encounter site.
