Desperate Azad knocks all doors for RS berth | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 29: Ghulam Nabi Azad, who seems all set to taste another defeat, is putting in all the resources to secure a win, which looks not so easy. According to sources the independents are constantly asked to send him to the Rajya Sabha, Azad had until now won the elections in the RS by being in the power. He had built his resources by being in the power and for using his close proximity to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi. It is this equation which has helped him to secure a win many times. But, with the Congress party out of the power both in the State and the Centre it is proving to be an uphill task for the Azad. Sources said close aides of the Azad are even promising all sort of things to the independents to help Azad make a win. Azad apart from his coterie is in constant touch with the independents as he is not sure about it. It is for the first time in his political career that Azad is facing difficulty in making it to RS. He had been only once elected to the Lok Sabha and in his second attempt, though for the first time from the State, he was defeated. According to the sources, Azad is also trying to get support from the PDP. He had good equation with senior party leadership and also with many other leaders of the party. However, he is not finding it easy to get their support. Azad to make him stay relevant in the politics especially in the J&K had used his influence in the Gandhi family to first secure his candidature and then make Rahul Gandhi convince that he should elicit support from the Omar Abdullah. It was on the word from the Rahul Gandhi that Omar Abdullah had agreed to support the Azad's candidature. |
