BJP to take Chenani-Nashri Tunnel dispute with GoI | India's longest tunnel likely to get delayed | | Javaid Naikoo
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 30: As the construction work on the longest tunnel of the country in Jammu and Kashmir is halted following a dispute from last three months, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) state wing has decided to take up the issue with the central government to ensure timely completion of the tunnel. The longest tunnel of the country under construction on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which according to reports may get delayed up to May 2016 following a billing dispute which erupted some three months ago between the company namely project concessionaire IL&FS Transportation Network and the construction contractor namely Leighton India Contractors. Talking to Early Times, BJP state secretary Munish Sharma said that they (state BJP) will take up the matter with the central government and ask the concerned union Minister, Nitin Gadkari to either change the construction company or pressurize the present Company to resume work on the project without further delaying the construction work on the project. "Completion of all important tunnel project has already been delayed by this company. There is little work left in the project completion but some dispute has created a problem. I will talk to Dr Jitendra Ji and also inform Nitin Gadkari ji about this issue in detail," he said. Pertinently only over a kilometer of excavation is left to complete the nine-km-long tunnel on the Chenani-Nashri section on the Jammu-Srinagar highway and as other necessary work as part of highway upgrade between Udhampur and Jammu is going in final stage and project completion is likely to cut about 46 kms from the current Jammu-Srinagar distance of 294 kms and reduce travel time by around three hours, bypass accident prone areas, ongoing dispute between the construction company and contractor if resolved could add mile stone in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. According to reports the Excavation work was stopped some three months ago because of the dispute between project concessionaire IL&FS Transportation Network and the construction contractor, Leighton India Contractors and according to reports despite the fact IL&FS Transportation carried many rounds of talks with contractors to complete the project and also is looking for other construction companies to manage the excavation part, yet there is success for them to resume the halted work on the project. Reports reveal that ongoing dispute is over some issue of money accounts in connection with the project between the construction company and the contractor and conflict between duo has stopped work on the project some three months back and since there was back to back election season going in Jammu and Kashmir, authorities could not intervene in the matter. |
