Valley people want MLAs to vote to go with state, Centre | Strategic vote values of independent, others for RS mandate | | K Koushal / Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 30: Come February 7 and all eyes would be trained on the triangular contest of notification 3 of Rajya Sabha elections which is pitted in between Congress candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad, Bhartiya Janta Party's Chander Mohan Sharma and Peoples Democratic Party's Nazir Ahmed Laway. While the talk of the town for the contest has zeroed in on Ghulam Nabi Azad's chances to make it through to the Rajya Sabha riding Independents' and others' sanction to seal his victory, the political grapevine in the state has much more to reveal than this romance. As the deal is inked between Peoples Democratic Party and Bhartiya Janta Party to run the state government, this combination is surely to affect certain amendments in the minds of the seven candidates , independents and others, to keep on rethinking on their strategic vote values and decide to whom to vote or not to. As per the situation arising out of the notification 3 of the Rajya Sabha, all the three candidates need a minimum of 29 each to squeeze in with a win to RS. PDP and BJP combine sitting pretty on 53 seats for notification 1 and 2 need 44 for both to chip in have secured entries for Mir Mohammad Fayaz and Shamsher Singh. This leaves an interesting battle or remaining three contestants on notification 3. "The independents and others joining the fray of seven belong to valley, with an exception of Udhampur MLA Pawan Gupta representing Jammu, does not this gives a point to ponder for valley voters whether to accept a Jammu candidate (Ghulam Nabi Azad) for his win to RS . Why can't they just put in their loyalties for a PDP man who is from valley only," was a tactical answer of Mohammad Niaz Ameen, a cloth merchant from valley who ferries from Mumbai to Srinagar to sell his wares. The changing developments among the independents also indicate that those who have to vote for a candidate for RS have his priorities first. "Why an independent voter may go for a dusking (setting down) political combine that has no value in Parliament and state even. Every MLA who wins his constituency needs funds and assurances from the government in the state as well as from Centre to do the developments works and come to the expectation of his people. In RS elections, I think who goes against the wind nose dives into hopelessness. Valley needs hope and not the hopelessness," said Ghulam Hasan Magray, a state government employee hailing from one of the valley constituency represented by an Independent MLA. Even the sources active in the independent constituencies are of opinion that the four RS seats would be those of ruling governments in state as well centre as Independent MLAs cannot risk their values worth among their people and have no other best choice rather than to go with the government only. |
