Revenue minister assigns job to new Patwaris, relieves old hands | Flood victims may have to wait for final compensation | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report srinagar, Mar 18: Flood victims, especially the people whose houses were damaged or had collapsed, during September 2014 deluge may have to wait for the final compensation to be provided by the government as the new dispensation has decided to once again scrutinize the cases of the flood affected people to "undo the wrongs" allegedly committed by the erstwhile NC-Cong regime. Sources told Early Times the new Revenue Minister and senior PDP leader Javed Mustafa Mir has asked the officials of his department to once again scrutinize the cases of the applicants who have applied for the relief and then recommend these. "Complaints about some people having demolished their damaged houses to seek full compensation from the government have also complicated the situation," said a source. "This has added to the woes of the real sufferers." "The victims who were provided the initial compensation of Rs 75000 are being asked to produce the Xerox copy of the cheques they were given after the official teams confirmed that their houses got collapsed due to floods," the source added. He said the new government has taken a serious note about the complaints that erstwhile regime had politicized the process and relief cheques were distributed among the National Conference workers. Sources said the Revenue Minister Javed Mustafa Mir recently issued an Order No. Rev/NG/52 of 2015 dated 09-03-2015 asking all the Deputy Commissioners as well as the drawing and disbursing officers to start the process of calling back all Patwaris to their home districts. "It looks like that government wants to entrust the job about providing further relief to new people and wants to start the process afresh. New officials taking charge would mean that they would take time to understand the entire process," said an official. He was of the opinion that the move to handover the task of identifying the victims afresh could backfire as people are already fed up due to process getting delayed due to one or other reason. "A few people had approached the Revenue Minister and had apprised him about the demerits of the move," said a source. The Minister is understood to have told the officials to implement his orders and to ensure that only genuine cases are processed and politics should not be played over the relief distribution. Sources said that some PDP legislators have also opposed the move of the Revenue Minister to send the Patwaris back to their parent departments as most of them believe that it would add to the woes of the flood victims. The MLA Batamallo and PDP leader Noor Muhammad, sources said, has shot a letter to deputy commissioner Srinagar, urging him not to replace the Patwaris involved in relief and rehabilitation process on ground in his constituency. "We know that previous regime politicized the entire process but we have to ensure that people don't suffer anymore. We have to look for some other way to ensure that only victims get the due compensation rather than starting the process afresh," said a close aide of MLA Batmaloo. The decision of the Revenue Minister may have triggered resentment but a few people at the helm believe that relief cheques were distributed among the political workers before the assembly polls to ensure that they vote for the National Conference. "There are many complaints about deserving flood victims were left out that's why we want to start the entire process afresh," said a close aide of the Revenue Minister. |
