Usman opposes Hurriyat, Soz supports it | Congress of contradictions | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 20 : Congress MLA and former militant Usman on Thursday took a line on the Hurriyat leaders in the Legislative Assembly that was not consistent with line former Union Minister and ex-JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz took in Delhi while talking to reporters on Wednesday. Militant-turned-mainstream Kashmiri politician Usman vehemently opposed the suggestion in the March 18 Governor's Address that Hurriyat leadership was a stakeholder and that it would be involved in the dialogue process leading to the resolution of the outstanding political issues facing the state. He contemptuously dismissed the Hurriyat leaders as "murderers of innocent people". "The murderers (separatists), stone pelters and those propagating secessionism can never be representative and can never be party to any dialogue. The MLAs are the real representatives," said Usman. He not only condemned the Hurriyat leadership, but also tore into Engineer Rashid, an independent MLA from Langate, Kashmir. "Engineer Abdul Rashid has been for the last seven-year advocating view point of the separatists in the Assembly unchecked," he said, and added that his conduct in the assembly was irresponsible. The line Usman took on the floor of the assembly did surprise many of his Kashmiri colleagues in the assembly for obvious reasons and, at the same time, suggested that all is not lost in Kashmir and there are nationalists in the Valley who have the guts to speak for India and against the secessionists, extremists and terrorists. One media report in this regard said: "The Congress has beaten the 'nationalist' BJP in taking on the separatists by terming the separatists as 'murderers' of innocent people". Usman, it needs to be underlined, has been speaking for India since years now and has suffered immensely in the process Contrast what Usman said with what Soz said and see for yourself the difference, which was glaring. Reacting to the BJP national president Amit Shah's March 17 Ahmadabad (Gujarat) assertion that his party wanted the Kashmir issue resolved, Saifuddin Soz had said that the Hurriyat leaders and Pakistan should also be made part of the dialogue process. "If Amit Shah wants to promote dialogue then everybody wants resolution of political imbroglio via talks…Yes, Hurriyat should also be part of dialogue. And why not Pakistan, we should talk to them too," he told reporters. Amit Shah had said that his party would not compromise on national interest and could end its alliance with PDP, if Kashmir issue was not solved. "People of this country have blessed us like Lord Shiva and given us very big responsibility. BJP will never compromise on national interest, merely to remain in power in Jammu and Kashmir," Shah said, addressing BJP workers in his assembly constituency Naranpura on Tuesday. |
