Jammu bandh a wake-up call for BJP | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, May 27: A complete and successful Jammu bandh, second in a month, over the issue of shifting of AIIMS to Kashmir valley from Jammu is nothing but a wake-up call for the BJP whose brand of politics revolves around Jammu region which is right now simmering with anger for being denied the premier health institution and abandoning artificial lake project on river Tawi. However, it seems the BJP is not in a mood to read the sentiments of the Jammu people as instead of giving an assurance that the Jammuites will get the AIIMS as announced earlier by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the party is trying its level best to divert the attention of the general public from the AIIMS controversy by issuing contradictory statements. While the two senior central leaders of the saffron party on Tuesday spoke in a tone which was quite alien to the BJP's 'pro-Jammu' image as their remarks did not give an iota of impression that the Union government is ready to consider the demand of establishing the AIIMS in Jammu region, on the other hand, the BJP's state unit president Jugal Kishore Sharma categorically stated that the AIIMS will definitely be opened in Jammu on the pattern of Kashmir valley for which the talks are on with the central government and announcement to this effect will be made shortly by a central minister. The Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Ram Shanker Katheria and BJP National Spokesperson and MP Meenakshi Lekhi tried very hard to convince that the demand of setting up of AIIMS in Jammu region is a non-issue, however, today's successful bandh over the shifting of AIIMS to Kashmir could be bracketed as an 'eye opener' for the BJP leadership who, it seems, is running away from the reality. Katheria while addressing media persons at Udhampur on the sidelines of BJP's Jan Kalyan Parv said that the issue of setting up AIIMS in Jammu region is being raked up deliberately as the premier health institution was sanctioned for Kashmir province only adding that an IIM and an IIT was granted in favour of Jammu. He further said that if a necessity arises, the AIIMS will also be opened at Jammu. While Lekhi publically said that the AIIMS was not given to any particular province but to the entire Jammu and Kashmir state. On the ongoing AIIMS controversy, Lekhi suggested that it should be opened at a location which could easily cater to the needs of all the three regions. But, the BJP leadership's topsy-turvy stand over the AIIMS issue is auguring well with the Jammuites who by observing two successful shut downs within a month have sent clear signals to the saffron party, which is ruling the state as well as the centre, that the people of Jammu region cannot be hoodwinked anymore. |
