AIIMS issue dents Rana's aspirations of becoming Jammu's leader | Kashmir centric NC coerces provincial president into silence | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 27: The issue of AIIMS which has stroked sentiments in the two regions of the state and is threatening to blow into major political controversy has put National Conference provincial president and MLA Nagrota in a dock. While the issue has imposed two shut downs in Jammu in couple of months, Devendra Rana the previous day attempted a tight rope walk to balance aspirations of the people of Jammu that he represents and those of his party, which is concerned primarily about the sentiments of people of Kashmir. In a press conference the previous day, Rana had said that AIIMS was not a political issue, obviously in a futile bid to play down the controversy which is threatening major political ramifications in the state. Sources within NC divulge that during the previous shut down in Jammu over the issue of shifting of AIIMS to Kashmir, provincial wing of the National Conference headed by Rana had supported the bandh call, inviting wrath and resentment of the party leaders in Kashmir. "Rana had called a meeting of the workers at Sher-i-Kashmir Bhawan in Jammu and called upon the workers to support the bandh, but he was called to Srinagar and censured by party leadership in Kashmir" told an insider. "Rana was shown his place by leaders like Mohammad Akbar Lone and AR Rather who told him that the party stood for AIIMS in Kashmir and that he was working against the interests of people of Kashmir by supporting the bandh call in Jammu. He was also anubbed by senior abdullah for supporting Jammu's cause," he informed. An intimidated Rana has now been caught between the devil and the deep sea, as he is finding it difficult to maintain a balance between the pro Kashmir stand of his party and aspirations of the people of Jammu of whom he has been trying to project himself as champion. |
