J&K apathetical to child healthcare | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 27:Unavailability of an NABL lab for testing of food samples in the state is exposing people, especially children to unsafe food which is being served to them under the Mid Day Meal scheme in the state; and this despite the fact that country has witnessed umpteen tragedies due to adulterated, unsafe food served under the mega scheme. National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) is an autonomous body under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, and is registered under the Societies Act. NABL has been established with the objective to provide Government, Industry and Society in general with a scheme for third-party assessment of the quality and technical competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Government of India has authorized NABL as the sole accreditation body for Testing and Calibration laboratories. In order to achieve this objective, NABL provides laboratory accreditation services to laboratories that are performing tests / calibrations in accordance with NABL criteria based on internationally accepted standard for laboratory accreditation ISO/IEC 17025. These services are offered in a non-discriminatory manner and are accessible to all testing and calibration laboratories in India and abroad, regardless of their ownership, legal status, size and degree of independence. As per another detail available with Early Times, only 50% children have been screened during first 3 quarters of Financial Year 2014-15 under the Rashtriya Bal Suraksha Karyakaram (RBSK) scheme in the government schools of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from the above, Health Card was also not maintained in most of Schools owing to which the students of the government schools have not been given the benefits of regular health check-ups. Pertinently RBSK is a comprehensive child health care that implies assurance of extensive health services for all children from birth to 18 years of age for a set of health conditions. These conditions are Diseases, Deficiencies, Disability and Developmental delays - 4 Ds. Universal screening would lead to early detection of medical conditions, timely intervention, ultimately leading to a reduction in mortality, morbidity and lifelong disability. |
