New VC: BGSBU admin delays appointment of search committee head 6/19/2015 11:37:33 PM Akshay Azad Early Times Report JAMMU, June 19: Baba Gulam Shah Bhadshah University (BGSBU) administration is yet to appoint head for the search committee to select new Vice Chancellor of the varsity. The tenure of incumbent VC Prof. IA Hamal is expiring in October 2015. Commissioner Secretary to government Higher Education department, Sarita Chouhan said that process to constitute a search committee was almost finalized but it was being delayed due to delay in appointment of official nominee by the BGSBU administration. She said that file has been forwarded to appoint nominee of the varsity and as soon as the official nominee would be appointed, search committee would be constituted and it would be made public. "As per rules, the BGSBU executive council is empowered to appoint an official nominee to be included in the search committee. The executive council, which is apex decision making body of the varsity, had last met on March 7 but the issue of appointing an official nominee for the search committee was not discussed in the meeting," sources said. They said the incumbent VC Prof Hamal had "deliberately dropped" the issue of appointing official nominee in the executive council meeting. "Prof. Hamal was aware that the executive council meeting is held once in a year and delay in appointment of official nominee would delay constitution of the search committee. Obviously, the delay in finalization of name of new VC will give Prof. IA Hamal more time to continue as VC," said the sources. They added that though VC has power to call a special meeting of the executive council, he has been deliberately delaying the nomination of nominee for the search committee. "Being Chancellor of the varsity, Chief Minister is also empowered to take a decision on appointing official nominee of varsity, and the decision can be ratified in the next Executive council meeting," said the sources, insisting that it was only due to delay on part of varsity authorities that the search committee constitution was being delayed. Sources said that after constitution of selection committee, applications would be invited from the aspiring candidates, and after short listing, the committee would interact with shortlisted people and forwarded the name to Chancellor to take the final call. "It is a long and hectic exercise which will take at least four to five months. Since the incumbent VC's five-year tenure is expiring in October 2015, the administration has only four months left," said the sources.
