Negative reactions to decision uncalled for AIIMS CC: Suspension of movement till July 20 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 19: The AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC), which had been spearheading movement for the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu and completion of artificial lake project over River Tawi since May 21, on Thursday suspended the movement till July 20. The ACC members took the decision following a written assurance from Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh that a decision to set up AIIMS in Jammu will be taken on or before July 20. Some top ACC members took the decision during the meeting with two BJP ministers, three BJP MLAs and some newcomers in the party and persons from bureaucracy and police. Critics says "it would have been better had they taken the government's proposal or commitment to the ACC general body as promised by the ACC chairman and JKHCBA president Abhinav Sharma". As expected, the decision of some ACC top members didn't go well with the Panthers Party, the Congress party and, the National Conference. This, notwithstanding the fact that those who took part in the meeting made it loud and clear that there could be an "indefinite bandh" across Jammu region and the agitation would be "further intensified" in case the authorities didn't announce AIIMS for Jammu latest by July 20. The Panthers Party chief patron Bhim Singh described the decision as "another betrayal by BJP". "They betrayed Jammu cause in 1978 and then during Shri Amarnath Land Row in 2008," said Bhim, adding that the "Panthers Party was proud of the fact that it initiated the movement and with the participation of Jammu, it showed its result". "The BJP again played another fraud but that is short-lived. The Panthers Party shall continue its movement at all costs. It shall hold protests and Dharna in Delhi and Jammu," he further said in Delhi, where the party held protest demonstration in support of AIIMS for Jammu. The Panthers Party, in addition, resolved to fight for the reorganization of the state, saying this was the only alternative left to resolve the Jammu issue on a permanent basis. The Congress party, which found in the ongoing agitation in Jammu in support of AIIMS an opportunity to regain the lost political space to the BJP and supported the AIIMS movement in a big way for political reasons. The Congress said that the party supported the Coordination Committee but not the decision taken. "We will wait and watch and if the decision is not in favour of the people of Jammu, the Congress will surely fight for the cause," its spokesperson, who rarely speaks, said. However, it was the National Conference which in collaboration with the Congress consistently damaged the Jammu cause to promote the Kashmiri cause that surprised everyone by opposing the decision. Taking on the under-attack BJP, its provincial president said if the BJP was unable to deliver it must come out of the government. "The BJP is in a state of trauma, as its ministers have no idea as to what all was going on in the State. Negotiations for what! If, as the BJP says, that the Centre has agreed to have an AIIMS at Jammu, they should immediately issue a notification in this regard and that is about all. This requires no discussions, no negotiations," he said. "These are delaying tactics of the government in a bid to create confusion and to defuse the situation at the moment in a clandestine manner to scuttle the agitation. There was no cohesion between words and the actions of the BJP leaders and ministers," he further said. The criticism of the Panthers Party, the Congress and the National Conference against the ACC was uncalled for, as those who accepted the government's written proposal held out a categorical statement that the movement for the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu would taken to its logical conclusion come what may. Instead of criticizing the ACC they and other parties, including the BJP, should make common cause with the ACC so that the Jammu got what it deserved. |
