Ramazan brings Kashmiris closer to police | Cops host Iftaar parties at public places | | Abdul Majid
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 24: At a time when killing of over half a dozen people at the hands of "unidentified gunmen" has unleashed a reign of terror in most parts of Kashmir, silver lining is that people here are getting closer to Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP). Thanks to hosting of Iftaar parties by cops at public places in this fasting month of Ramazan. Come evenings and huge contingency of cops arrive at public places in vehicles loaded with a variety of refreshment ranging from juices to fruits and dates to confectionery including Pakodas. Much like a police drill, the cops, erect makeshift kiosks to host Iftaar parties. And at sunset as the mosque loudspeakers pronounce Iftaar, the call for breaking the fast, people are seen rushing toward these police booths where cops offer all beverages and foods to relish. "This is really a good endeavour otherwise people like me had to fend for Iftaar as we are away from home," said an attendant at SKIMS Medical College Hospital Bemina where one such booth was erected. People of Kashmir have warmly welcomed the development and nobody minds breaking the fast at the hands of police. Islamic scholars on the other hand have equally hailed the development. The parties are being hosted in almost every nook and corner of the city including the busy market places. At Jehangir Chowk and Regal Chowk, policemen are often seen holding trays loaded with beverages and fruits to offer to people moving down the busy roads. Officials said every day police spends thousands of rupees on this goodwill drive aimed to improve police-public relations in this trouble-torn region. Apart from the 24 odd police stations in Srinagar, the Police Control Room is out with the servings. "Around one thousand Jawans are on Iftaar duty," said a police official. This all started last year but interestingly wasn't the idea of any Muslim official. Officials said Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar Amit Kumar introduced this idea into Khaki ranks that Iftaar be hosted for civilians. Kumar would personally host Iftaar at public places in the summer capital. This year the endeavour has grown manifold while the PCR is rigorously hosting parties. A police official said hosting Iftaar parties reflects the true face of secular India. "We are for every religion. On one hand we are busy with Yatra preparations whereas on the other we are equally busy with Ramazan. This is secularism," the official said. |
