PDP, BJP fail to keep election promise of re-opening Haji Yusuf's death case | Aggrieved family pins hopes on Supreme Court for justice | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 24: As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state has failed to re-open the case regarding the controversial death of National Conference leader Haji Mohammad Yusuf, the aggrieved family has pinned its hopes on Supreme Court for 'justice' in the case. Haji Yusuf's family believes that no political party has the will to probe the matter in its right perspective and that the solution can be found out only through legal means. The aggrieved family says that despite repeated requests the First Information Report (FIR) has not been filed in the case and not to talk of the subsequent investigations. Talking to Early Times, Haji Yusuf's son Talib Yusuf said that both PDP and BJP during the campaign for the 2014 assembly elections promised that they would re-open the case and investigate the matter thoroughly. Talib said that the promises remained promises with nothing practical being done on the ground. "During the election campaign and after that we were promised that the case would be re-opened. As the PDP-BJP took charge in the state we were hoping that justice would be done, but nothing of that sort happened. The present dispensation is almost four months old now, but up to this moment of time they have failed to keep their word," said Talib. Talib expressed surprise that no FIR whatsoever has been filed in the case and said that mere registration of a case does not indict an accused person. He said that mere directions from the political set up to the Inspector General of Police were enough to file an FIR adding that this has not happened so for even after three and half years. "At the end of the day we can say that political parties in the state have exploited the murder of my father for their political gains. We have lost hope with the political system and as such there are bleak chances of a political solution to the case. Our hopes are pinned with the legal system and hopefully we would get justice from Supreme Court," said the son of Haji Yusuf. Talib said that on April 24, 2015 the Supreme Court observed that the case cannot be dismissed at this point of time and it has to be carried out before any final decision is taken. He said that his family has great hopes and expectations from the Supreme Court adding that they expect justice from the highest court of India. "Senior BJP leader and present union minister for Finance, Arun Jaitley had on record said that the case would be re-opened and justice would be done. He too has failed to fulfill his promise and it is disappointing. We had requested the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to get the case re-opened, but here too we got dejected. The Governor's office was also approached for registration of FIR, but that remains to be filed," said Talib. It would be in place to mention here that Haji Yusuf died in mysterious circumstances at the residence of then chief minister Omar Abdullah on September 29, 2011. Haji Yusuf's death had created flutters in the state with the political parties demanding for resignation of Omar and his trial in the court of law. Haji Yusuf's family had alleged due to the 'torture' meted out to him by then IGP Crime, Raja Aijaz Ali at the residence of Omar. However, the state government at that time had said that Haji Yusuf's death was natural. The family had demanded for a probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case. However, the demand was out-rightly rejected by Omar and his party. Since then Raja Aijaz has joined PDP and fought the elections from Uri assembly segment where he was defeated by Mohammad Shafi Uri of National Conference. |
