`Nothing can go wrong in Mufti's regime' | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 24: A dusky damsel clad in a traditional Kashmiri phiren (gown) in a South Kashmir village carrying a (phuth) (basket) of cow dung on her head for the paddy fields ignored a team of scribes who were in her village for a story on poppy cultivation last week. She was confident and sang a Kashmiri song as she walked to lighten her `burden' in the nearby fields. Nobody among the scribes could muster the courage to talk to the girl. An old man came from the opposite direction. The girl wished him and she wished her back, The scribes also wished him and tried to extract information about the village from him. "Things have changed since Mufti Sayed took over as Chief Minister of the state, " he said. "See that girl. How freely she is walking. Such scenes were very rare in the previous regime," he added. When asked what had changed in the past three months, the old man said, "apparently nothing. Nothing can change in three months but Mufti's assuming office has instilled confidence among the villagers. The villagers have seen his previous regime when the things changed." The old man said the attitude of the police and the troops in the nearby camp has also changed. "This is why the girl you just saw was so confident. The villagers believe that nothing can go wrong in Mufti's regime and this is what matters," he said. |
