Union minister's PRO addresses press conference in Jammu office ….! | Unprecedented move | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 24: In an unprecedented move, media persons of Jammu got to see something interesting and surprising at a scheduled press conference for which proper and prior invitation was extended a day ago. In fact it is a never before seen instance which in no way can become a precedent in the power circles. For the first time the PRO of any Union Minister, as powerful as one in PMO office-Dr Jitendra Singh, did something today which he is not authorised to do nor has the capacity to take such a step. Sanjeev Sharma, PRO to Dr Singh called a press conference in latter's Jammu office today and addressed media persons while giving information about a bridge project in jurisdiction of the minister in capacity of MP. The press conference note duly signed and sent by the said PRO stated it all, though many media persons made it press conference in person only to get surprised that private PRO of any minister providing information besides making announcement about certain aspects of the project. PROs , more than just one, besides PAs in personal staff of ministers in not anything new with the ministers. But it has never been heard before or seen that they call press conferences on their own or with the permission of the bosses. That their designation suggests only a link or bridge between the minister and the media is only suggestive of the post itself and at the most they can forward the statements of the concerned minister to press. But in way they have the authority to speak on behalf of the minister, no matter the information may be so urgent and important. One wonders also about the fact that how can the Union Minister, as important and powerful as Dr Jitender Singh allow such things to happen in his office. How did he allow the PRO to go to press directly and address the media persons at Jammu office…? One can understand if they were a part of official media like state Information department or PIB officers. Even these officials are not authorised to call press conference on their own, leave alone addressing it. They can only assist the ministers in convening such programmes and press conferences and ensure media presence. Why in this case the concerned minister chose himself to stay away or deliberately skip the press conference is a moot question. It is also a possibility that PRO ventured this on his own. However, in both the situations, the precedent has come in for sharp criticism which only concerned minister can justify. Interestingly, the press conference note at the end did not fail to mention the name of other two staff members -Bharat Sharma and Devinder Singh, as having remained present in the press conference.
