Anonymous letter scares restive Sopore landlords, non-locals get 3-day ultimatum | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 24: Even as the police say that situation in Sopore is under control, an anonymous letter asking non-local laborers to leave the area within three days has triggered another spell of fear in this "Apple Town", which witnessed a series of killings in the past around a month. The locals said in yet another case of mysterious warning, Imam of Jamia Masjid Sopore, has received a letter from unknown people threatening non- local laborers to vacate the town in next three days or face dire consequences. The locals said the Imam read the letter before the people. "The non-local laborers are given 3 days to vacate Sopore town. It is also mentioned that if the non local laborers will not vacate the town, people having leased accommodation to them will be the first target," the locals said. The news spread like wildfire with both the non-local laborers and their landlords scared for life. "I don't know what is going to happen because the government has failed to come to our rescue," the Sopore locals said. Witnesses said in the wake of the latest warning some of the landlords have asked non-local tenants, mostly Bihari laborers to vacate the space forthwith. "We have been asked to leave the place or that our belongings will be thrown out... No one is willing to give us space and we ourselves also feel it's better to leave this risky area," said a group of non-local laborers. It is for the second time in less than a month that non locals have been threatened to leave north Kashmir. Earlier this month militant posters from Tehreek-e-Taliban Jammu and Kashmir warned people who have rented out apartments to non-local laborers. "Action will be taken against those households who give shelter to Bihari laborers," the posters warned. The town has witnessed six killings in a month while police said it was the handiwork of breakaway faction of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit. The police have saying that there was nothing to worry about and that the killers have been identified. Even though police released posters of some wanted militants with bounty on their head, the locals have questioned the credentials. Recently a shopkeeper said his photo has been erroneously released in one such poster "even though I have no connection with militancy." The north Kashmir people have been accusing the government of being non-serious towards such incidents. When contacted a police official said the matter was being looked into. "But there's nothing to worry about as the situation is fully under control now," he said. |
