Mufti's hollow threat on Article 370 | | | As a coalition partner the BJP leaders were supposed to be present during the brief ceremony at the Martyr's graveyard in Srinagar on July 13 what the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, paid floral tributes to the memory of the martyrs who fell to the bullets during the Dogra rule in 1931.If the BJP leaders stayed away from the function they did so in accordance with the party's political ideology. Chief of the Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, has ridiculed the BJP leaders, especially the ministers, for having stayed away from the Government function that too when the Martyr's Day was a gazetted holday. But the BJP leaders believe that sharing power is something separate from compromising on the party's political agenda and ideology. At the same time there would have been no harm for the BJP ministers if they simply placed wreaths on the graves of the martyr's in the graveyard.Yes,they would have courted controversy if they had lauded the role of these martyrs or would have treated their sacrifice as the beginning of the freedom struggle in Kashmir. It seems the BJP leaders did the right thing by staying away from the solemn function because whatever Mufti Sayeed has stated during the function should have forced the BJP leaders to beat a hasty retreat from the graveyard. That could have caused bigger embarrassment for the coalition Government. Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed has urged people to protect Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that State Assembly is a "powerful institution which has the prerogative to accept or reject laws passed in the Indian Parliament."Mufti's assertions came barely few days after reports indicated that an RSS-backed think-tank-J&K Study Centre (JKSC)-is set to challenge Article 35A, an outgrowth of Article 370, in the Supreme Court to seek its abrogation. "It is your vote that has brought us to power. Your vote is powerful and if you want to safeguard J&K's identity and special status, use this vote for that," the Chief Minister told a gathering of PDP supporters at Martyrs' Graveyard in old Srinagar , after paying floral tributes to the martyrs of July 13, 1931. Mufti also offered 'special fateh prayers' for the martyrs. It is not clearly known what had motivated the mild mannered Mufti Sayeed to voice his feelings on Article 370 of the constitution that grants special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The only reason that may have provoked the Mufti to air his views on Article 370 is his fears that the BJP led NDA Government in the centre was thinking of abrogating Article 370 and if it was done during the time the Mufti headed a coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir it could have further weakened his position and dwarfed his political stature. The National Conference leadership is already trying to kick up one political controversy or the other which could make the Muftis vulnerable to peoples' anger. Hence he has cautioned the BJP about the powers of the state Assembly to accept or reject any law passed by the parliament. For r ejecting any central law the Mufti needs the support of a two-third majority of the House and even if he gets the support of National Conference MLAs and some independent candidates.Yes the Mufti can muster a two-third support if the Congress too backs his plan to reject any central law and the Congress will not be ready to support him.Hence Mufti Sayeed is dishing out hollow threat to the BJP.
