Anantnag, July 15: Protests Wednesday erupted at Sheshnag, en route to the holy cave shrine of Shri Amarnathji, after a CRPF trooper allegedly thrashed a ponywala and injured him critically.
Reports said that Ponywala was thrashed by the CRPF trooper deployed at the exit point of Sheshnag when the latter was fixing rate with an Amaranth pilgrim. Injured was identified as Fareed Ahmad Khatana, son of Mohammad Abdullah Kahatna of Sallar Sheikhpopra, Pahalgam.
"He (CRPF trooper) felt that the ponywala was overcharging the pilgrim and beat him up. He received injuries in his head and was airlifted to Srinagar in a critical condition," a ponywala told Early Times.
He said that doctors at Sheshnag medical camp declared the injured critical and asked Shrine Board authorities to airlift him for further treatment. "First we brought him to Sheshnag medical camp but the doctors referred him to Srinagar and he was subsequently airlifted," he added.
He said that ponywalas later held a demonstration against the erring CRPF trooper and demanded legal action against him. "Police and SASB officials pacified the protesters by assuring action against the cop,"
he informed.
However, according to police sources no FIR has been registered against the CRPF trooper.
"As of now police haven't registered FIR against the cop,"MLA Pahalgam, Altaf Ahmad Wani who condemned the incident and is demanding registration of FIR against the cop, told Early Times. Deputy Inspector General of Police South Kashmir Range and Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag did not respond to repeated calls of this reporter.
