BARAMULLA, July 15: Suspected militants today lobbed two hand grenades on a mobile telecommunication tower in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.
The assailants threw grenades towards Airtel mobile tower located in the premises of one Ghulam Hassan Bhat at Nehalpora, Pattan. Both the grenades went off and caused damage to the windowpanes, police sources told Early Times.
Locals, however, said the grenades failed to explode but created panic in the area. "A young boy carrying a pistol appeared in the premises of Bhat and lobbed two grenades towards the tower. The family ran for cover and the grenades didn't explode. Immediately after the incident, police rushed to the spot," a local resident said.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, North Kashmir Range, Garib Dass told Early Times that the militants hurled two grenades on the mobile tower. "Fortunately, they didn't explode, otherwise it would have caused a major damage," he said.
Dass said after the attack, a police party rushed to the spot. As their vehicle reached near the grid station, suspected militants triggered a mine blast to inflict damage on police, said Dass.
"It was a trap, and fortunately the mine did not explode as per its strength. If there would have a been a blast, it would have killed several cops. The militants failed to trigger it successfully," Dass said. He said police and army are patrolling the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the assailants. In May, an obscure militant group Lashker-e-Islam launched a spate of attacks against telecom employees and those who have rented out space for installation of mobile towers in north Kashmir.
Two persons died in the attacks while many landlords fled from their houses. The attacks also led to brief suspension of mobile services in Baramulla district especially in Sopore town and its adjoining areas.
