Track-II suggestion divides K-Separatists | Geelani, Mirwaiz, Malik | | ET Report JAMMU, July 15: A few days ago, it appeared that separatists Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had ironed out differences among them and they would speak in one voice as far as the Kashmir issue and its solution and attitude towards Pakistan were concerned. The reason was that they were together at the residence of Geelani and the occasion was an Iftaar party. They had also given an impression a number of times after April 15, 2015, that they would work in unison and the National Conference had hailed them for what called unity among them. However, things have changed after July 10, when the Indian and Pakistan Foreign Secretaries made a joint statement on Indo-Pak relations at Ufa city in Russia and Pakistan foreign Office suggested that the issues of Siachen, Kashmir and Sir Creek will be tackled through track-II diplomacy. Malik was the first separatist to take on Islamabad. "To say that Kashmir issue will be taken up through back door diplomacy is actually insulting this living nation that has a 5000 year old history and has rendered more than five lakh sacrifices for its freedom," Malik said in a statement while reacting to statement of Pakistani foreign minister Sartaj Aziz in which he had said that Kashmir would be taken up during secret talks. He took on Islamabad on July 12 asserting "this attitude of time pass and putting serious issues to back burner will further ignite the situation and Indian and Pakistani leaders should know that without resolving Jammu & Kashmir issue the dreams of peaceful and progressive south Asia will never come true". And, on July 14, Geelani and Mirwaiz spoke differently. Geelani announced that he would not join the Iftaar party to be hosted by Pakistan High Commissioner in Delhi Abdul Basit, as Pakistan didn't raise the Kashmiri issue during the Ufa talks between the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Mian Nawaz Sharif. He also rejected the track-II methodology. "The skipping of Kashmir in the recent India, Pakistan meeting is disappointing and as a symbolic protest, Hurriyat is boycotting the Eid Milan party," the Hurriyat spokesman said. "It is a very painful act and every Kashmiri felt its pain," the spokesman of Geelani said, adding "although the Pakistan has been supporting the right to self determination of Kashmiris from 1947 but the lack of a permanent and stable policy on diplomatic level sometimes washes away everything and the apologetic approach unwillingly damage the Kashmir cause severely". As for Mirwaiz, he endorsed the track-II methodology, vouched for four-point General Pervez Musharraf's formula and said he was willing to talk to New Delhi provided Prime Minister Narendra Modi pursued the Vajpayee line on Jammu & Kashmir. "I am willing to do business with the Narendra Modi government provided it 'revisits' the Vajpayee path" (dialogue within the ambit of humanity) and "I am also willing to accept the Musharraf's formula" as a starting point towards the final resolution of the Kashmir issue. "The dialogue cannot be for status quo. (Pakistan's former President) Musharraf's four-point formula can be a starting point. Sartaj Aziz's idea of backchannel talks on Kashmir is the best way forward. I think when we discuss backchannel, there won't be any pressure," he said while talking to a correspondent of a leading daily. The Musharraf formula is: Make borders irrelevant, demilitarize state, self-governance and a joint India-Pak mechanism over Jammu & Kashmir on both sides of the Line of Control. All this suggests that Kashmiri separatists continue to remain a divided lot. It is understandable. For, they see in their disunity an opportunity to not only amass wealth, but also to retain control over their respective sectarian constituencies, which are rather limited. But more than that, what these fanatics and separatists said also established that they do not consider Jammu province and Ladakh region important factors in the political situation of the state. And the worst part of the whole situation is the failure of the political class in Jammu region to counter Kashmiri separatists and others who talk about greater autonomy and tell them that people of Jammu and Ladakh are against them and for their full merger with India. |
