Pak HC's Eid Milan may end separatists re-union | Geelani to boycott, Mirwaiz may attend | | Early Times Report
sRINAGAR, July 15: The honeymoon of separatist reunion is likely to be short lived. Within a week of breaking bread together at Iftaar party hosted by Syed Ali Geelani, his arch-rival Mirwaiz Umar Farooq may have to part ways again. This time, the invitation from Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has pushed the separatist leaders between the devil and the deep sea. While Geelani has announced a categorical 'No' to the invite, insiders said Mirwaiz was likely to attend the feast. They said Mirwaiz who in the past months has been losing his power and party cadres to Geelani's faction of the Hurriyat has no options but to attend the party. "Pakistan over the months has been making the Geelani camp of separatists stronger at the cost of Mirwaiz and if Mirwaiz doesn't attend the Eid Milan he can face the worst," said a source privy to Mirwiaz. He said Mirwaiz thinks it was high time for him to improve relations with Pakistan and get Geelani again cut to size. "Pakistan knows it very well how to make separatist leaders play as puppets. This time Mirwaiz can be the beneficiary if he attends the party," the sources said. They said a final decision in this regard would be taken after the meeting of the Hurriyat leaders. "Mirwaiz is actually in a tight spot. If he hugs Pakistan invite, it will amount to stabbing reunion efforts," the sources said. In a surprise snub to Pakistan, hardline Hurriyat leader Geelani on July 14 decided to "boycott" the Eid Milan being hosted by Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit in Delhi on 21 July, making it the first time that he has turned down such an invite. Geelani decided to boycott the event as a protest against non-inclusion of Kashmir in the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa in Russia in the first week of July. "Hurriyat has decided against taking part in the Eid Milan party of Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. The non-inclusion of Kashmir in the recent meeting between Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif is unfortunate and as such Hurriyat will boycott the party as a token of protest," a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement in Srinagar. He said neither the conglomerate chairman (Geelani) nor any representative of the Hurriyat will attend the function. Pakistani Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi had telephoned Geelani to extend him an invite and informed him that a formal invitation had been dispatched, he said. "However, Geelani told him that a decision to attend the meet will be taken after consultations. The Hurriyat met today and decided to boycott the event," the spokesman said. But the Hurriyat M and other separatist leaders including Naeem Ahmed Khan and Shabir Shah are yet to say anything publicly on the issue. |
