Rudderless National Conference criticizes proposed developmental package for state | Insults flood hit people by failing to utter even a single word | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 15: Recent reports that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi might announce a developmental package for Jammu & Kashmir, has put National Conference in a tight spot. The party has started taking pot shots on the package even though it is yet to be announced formally. Talking to media persons at Martyrs Graveyard in downtown Srinagar couple of days back, National Conference working President, Omar Abdullah said that package is being announced to buy the people of state more so those living in Kashmir valley. Omar said that his party would fight the same tooth and nail and ensure that dignity of people is not put to stake. Not long ago, National Conference, once the leading mainstream political party of the state had taken a dig at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state for not being able to pursue the developmental agenda. Now when the developmental package is all set to be announced the party has taken a contrasting position. There is no denying the fact that PDP-BJP government has failed to come to the expectations of the people during its four month rule so far. However, at the same time if something positive is all set to happen the same should be welcomed by politicians cutting across the party ideologies. National Conference and its leaders should remember that people of Kashmir are looking for financial support so that they could re-build their lives after the devastating deluge of September 2014. If the Government of India comes out with some financial package which is tipped to be around Rs. 50,000 crores it should be welcomed by people including the politicians. Even if 10 percent of the proposed package is kept for the relief of flood hit people it would go a long way in settling the nerves of the people who lost everything in the flood. One can hope and expect that more and more funds are sanctioned for providing relief to the flood affected people. In such a scenario it was not prudent for National Conference and its leaders to criticize the package proposed to be announced by Prime Minister in near future. The party should have instead pitched the demand for proper rehabilitation package for the people affected by the flood. This would have gone well with the people more so those badly hit by the devastating deluge. It would be in place to mention that previous National Conference-Congress coalition government in the state failed to pursue the proposal submitted by it with the central government for relief and rehabilitation of flood hit people. Both the National Conference and Congress leaders shirked their responsibilities and were not serious in pursuing the proposal of Rs. 44,000 crores with the Government of India. Furthermore, the World Bank found faults in the proposal and put the losses suffered by people due to flood at Rs. 21,000 crores. The incumbent Minister for Finance, Haseeb Drabu has also maintained from time to time that the proposal submitted by previous coalition government was full of errors and as such was rejected by Government of India.
