Department of Buddhist Studies facing apathy of JU authority | Two professors manning department for years | | GS Asgotra Early Times Report JAMMU, July 15: The Buddhist Department of Jammu University is a striking case of neglect shown by varsity authority, as the only two professors are taking care of Post Graduate and Ph.D courses for years. Moreover, the callous attitude of varsity toward students of Buddhist Studies could be gauged from the fact that one year ago, after the superannuation of one professor, the authority had advertisement for a post of Associate Professor but surprisingly the post is still lying vacant due to which, already enrolled students have suffered but the authority remained indifferent. Source in department informed Early Times that the JU authority instead of filling up the vacant post, compelled the remaining two professors to organize PG course as well as research works, adding, "The department since their establishment has been facing step motherly treatment" he said. He further said that the former Vice Chancellor, Mohan Pal Singh Ishar, during his tenure, had repeatedly attempted to merge the Buddhist Studies Department into Philosophy department but due to resistance of faculty members, it could not be done. "The faculty member had pinned hope on new Vice Chancellor to fill up the vacant posts but he has also not shown any interest", he said. "Due to shortage of teaching faculty, the aspirant scholars who were enrolled for Ph.D are still waiting for their registration", he added. An aspirant Scholar wishing anonymity said that after the superannuation of Dr. RK Mishra, presently only two professors, Dr. B. Labh and Dr. R N Singh are manning the department. He further said that he time and again represented to the JU authority but to no avail. Pertinently, The Department of Buddhist Studies was established in 1987. The vision and aim behind establishing this Department as a distinguished centre of Post-Graduate Teaching and Research in the North-Western state of India was to preserve and disseminate the traditional Buddhist wisdom and the chequered history of its glorious past in Jammu-Kashmir region but due to step motherly attitude by JU authority, the department has not been able to achieve its goal. |
