Bar to suspend work till July 30 on AIIMS issue | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 23: The J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu, today decided to strike work in courts till July 30 as mark of protest against the Centre's failure to set up AIIMS in Jammu as was promised by it a few months back in the budget session of the parliament. The historic decision was taken in a marathon general house meeting which was held at bar chamber, high court complex, here. More than 500 advocates participated and reposed full faith in leadership of the bar president and chairman of AIIMS coordination committee (ACC), Abhinav Sharma. Speaker after speaker termed "some" BJP leaders as "bluff masters" and charged the party with breaching the faith of people of Jammu region. The speakers said that the people of Jammu region had voted for BJP in a large number and with enthusiasm, hoping that the BJP, if came to power in the state, would end discrimination with them and compensate for the socio-economic and political losses suffered by the region during all these 67 years at the hands of New Delhi-backed Kashmiri rulers. "It is regrettable that the BJP shattered the faith of the people of Jammu region and compelled them to come on to the streets to achieve even an institution like AIIMS. The people of Jammu region had not voted for the BJP to get such a shabby treatment for the massive mandate they gave it," said Abhinav Sharma and threatened that BJP will have to pay through its nose for its act of betrayal. Sharma informed the General House that more than 130 civil society organizations and leaders of various interests including trade, transport and industry are part of ACC and they are all working in unison with them. He reiterated the stand that ACC will achieve for Jammu the proposed AIIMS and warned the BJP of serious consequences in case it failed to feel the Jammu's pulse. Former bar president and senior advocate B S Slathia charged the authorities with creating communal tension in different parts of Jammu region, including Jammu city, Rajouri and Kishtwar to weaken the ongoing movement on AIIMS in the region. He said the ACC, an amalgam of leading social organizations will not allow the authorities to cause schism in the society as "we are committed to preserve the distinct identity of the region, which is known for accommodation, brotherhood and peaceful living". Others, who addressed the general house, included V R Wazir, D S Saini, Ashok Vijay Gupta, K K Pangotra and Shah Mohammad Choudhary. |
