Over 60% surge in local militancy in two years | Local educated youth join militancy | | Javaid Naikoo
Early Times Report Jammu, July 29: The trend among the local educated youth to join militancy in four districts of south Kashmir has irked the authorities. According to sources around 102 militants and over 50 over ground workers (OGW's) are active in four districts of south Kashmir and for the first time in last five years local militants have outnumbered the foreigners in Kashmir. From April militancy in Kashmir particularly in south Kashmir saw an abrupt upward trend. It is believed that local militancy in Kashmir is witnessing over 60 % surge for some unknown reasons among youth particularly among educated ones. Sources said that at present over 150 militants and over 100 OGW's are reported to be active in North, south and Budgam District of Central Kashmir and around 48 militants of Pakistan have shifted to North Kashmir and some areas of Jammu and Rajouri and in a way handed over south Kashmir to local militants. A police official said the police do not know the exact number of local militants in four districts of South Kashmir as of now as the graph of local militancy according to him is changing almost after every week from last 19 months. As per sources around 30 youth from south and 3 from North Kashmir have joined militancy since January 2015 and most of youth joining militant outfit 'Hizbul-Mujahideen' are from South Kashmir's Pulwama and Shopian Districts. No reports of youth joining militancy according to sources were so far reported from Srinagar city and Ganderbal areas. However more youth are joining militant ranks in Kulgam District than its nearby Anantnag. Sources say Kashmir will continue to witness increase in violence in the coming months or years as the new local militants, mostly educated youth are well aware of areas and strategies of security forces than outsiders who usually come from Pakistan. Normal life in Kashmir according to sources has already started getting murky with repeated targeting of mobile phone installations and mysterious killings of people associated with this business in which so far over a dozen mobile towers have been targeted in North Kashmir and Srinagar City until recently. Local militants who according to sources belong to South Kashmir these days run many pages on social Networking site Facebook is one among the strong factors that more and more youth are getting involved in militancy. |
