PDP's size and stature under threat | | | When PDP cancelled its foundation day function scheduled to be held in Srinagar on Tuesday it was a befitting tribute of the party to India's former President, Dr A.P.J.Kalam who had died the other day. Well Kalam deserves the level of tributes that he received after his demise. In fact during his life as a scientist and later as President of India Kalam has received adulation, respect and love of millions of people in India. For scientists all over the world he is called the missile man because he had been instrumental in helping India to enter into the club of nations having missile development technology. The PDP leadership felt that by cancelling its foundation day celebration the party could pay since and heartfelt tributes to the missile man. The PDP can celebrate its foundation day any time and at anywhere but the country cannot fill the void created by Dr Kalam';s demise. That the PDP cancelled its foundation day celebrations indicated that the PDP had plans of celebrating its birth in a big way otherwise there was no reason for the party to postpone the celebrations where there would have been no music but speeches. No music but discussion and debate. Discussion on the party's achievements and its failures. Debate on whether the party did the right thing by joining hands with the BJP in forming the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir. Indications are that the celebration has not been cancelled. It has been postponed and the party Chief, Mehbooba Mufti, may fix a new date for the foundation day celebration of the youngest regional party that has shared power twice, first with the Congress in 2002 and later with the BJP in 2015.The 17-year old has been able to measure swords with the 77-year old National Conference because the PDP operates on the ideology of self-rule as distinctly different the issues of autonomy. It believes that self-rule as a political philosophy as opposed to autonomy provides for empowerment of people of the state. After the 2014 general elections, 3 of its members were elected to Lok Sabha. Its strength in the Legislative Assembly is 28 and in the Rajya Sabha is 2. The party is currently running a coalition government in J&K with BJP. Well the style of functioning of Mufti Sayeed, when he headed a PDP-Congress coalition Government between 2002 and 2005, has been far better than the one he is heading with the BJP at the current moment. It may be because of difficult legacy he has inherited from the previous National Conference-Congress coalition Government. During these 17 years the PDP has grown in size and stature. However, joining hands with the BJP for forming the Government in Jammu and Kashmir has been a difficult choice for the Mufti. But as a shrewd politician he took the risk despite the fact that his valley centric party had earned displeasure from various section of people in the Kashmir province where the BJP had been rejected in the Assembly election. And the risk the Mufti took was in the interests of the people of the state. He thought that by joining hands with the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir he could expect liberal financial assistance from the BJP led NDA Government in the centre. He needed money for improving power generation. He needed money for paying compensation to those who had been affected by September 2014 floods. He needed money to rebuild the infrastructure that had been damaged bt the floods. He needed money for increasing job avenues for the educated unemployed youth. He needed money for toning up various sectors including that of health, agriculture, horticulture industry and education. Unfortunately the money is yet to come and the Mufti finds himself in the soup. If the Government of India wants the PDP-BJP coalition to produce results, to improve governance and redress grievances and problems of people the Modi led centre has to sanction liberal financial package. And if the PDP postponed its foundation day celebration it did the right thing because there was nothing glaring for the party to celebrate. |
