Settlement of Army men in Kashmir: Another potential waterloo between PDP-BJP?

Jammu, Aug 19: The coalition partners in the state government, PDP and BJP could be at the loggerheads again, this time over the proposed establishment of 'Sainik colonies'-the residential clusters for the men of the security forces and the Army who have served in the State.
The idea mooted by the BJP MP and former RSS ideologue Tarun Vijay straight way stirred a controversy in Kashmir as separatists vehemently opposed the move, terming it as an attempt to change the demographic character of the valley and also as an attempt by the BJP to dilute the 'disputed' status of J&K.
While the statements have continued to pour in from the separatist leaders representing different dispensations, BJP has maintained a strategic silence on the issue. The State BJP, which recently had to eat a humble pie over the AIIMS issue has chosen to apparently stay aloof from the issue even as Tarun Vijay who mooted the idea has been pretty eloquent on the issue.
Reacting to the statements of the BJP, emanating from New Delhi and voices of dissent resonating from militant and separatist organizations, the Education Minister Nayeem Akhter said no such proposal was before government.
He said the reports about building of any such colony in Kashmir were "absolutely baseless". "I don't know any such thing," Akhter said talking to media persons here today. "There is no such proposal before the government," he added. Akhter's statement has again embarrassed the BJP as it has been taken amongst the constituency of the BJP as yet another snub by the coalition partner PDP. "The idea is still in its infancy and lot of deliberations need to be done before arriving at any decision at the level of the party" said a senior party functionary, adding that there was no question of any difference of opinion between the coalition partners on the issue when it has not come up for deliberations.
