LoC flare up divides coalition partners in JK | PDP, BJP speak in different tunes | | Peerzada Ummer ET Report Srinagar, Aug 29: Amid huge flare up between Indo-Pak armies on the Line of Control (LoC), the partners in J&K's coalition government are on loggerheads with one wanting Vajpayee-type 'soft' policy and the other stern action by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the cross-LoC firings and shelling continue to claim civilian lives, the two coalition partners-PDP and BJP-have started speaking in different languages over the issue. "I remind the public and the central government that if an understanding (on the ceasefire) with Pakistan could be reached in the Vajpayee era, a similar agreement can and needs to be negotiated under the leadership of Modi," was how one of the PDP leaders commented over the situation. The PDP leader said the status quo in J&K is not acceptable to anyone in the state as repeated ceasefire violations and other outstanding issues have not been adequately addressed by the government of India. The party added that the responsibility for bringing peace in the state and as well as in the region lies with New Delhi. On the other hand, the BJP has termed the ceasefire violations as Pakistan's 'frustration', saying the government should adopt a tough stand to deal with the situation on the borders. The party has not accepted PDP's stand over the issue and instead is pitching for a tougher approach. Earlier, when the NSA level talks were cancelled by Pakistan, PDP termed the development as 'unfortunate' while stating that the need of the hour was to talk so that issues could be resolved on the table. The BJP's stand on the other hand continues to remain contrary. The party doesn't even recognize Kashmiri separatists as a party to the Kashmir dispute. Sources said that during the meeting of PDP-BJP coordination committee, it was threadbare discussed between the two parties that the subtle issued shall be undermined and focus should be over the governance. "There are contradictory statements coming out from both the parties. It is indeed unfortunate to witness that people are getting confused over the ground situation as the government itself is not toeing a single line," said a BJP leader. Meanwhile, PDP sources said the party would not remain silent on the situation. "Besides being a part of the government, PDP is a political party. It has a constituency and it is not going to surrender its stand. We will continue to pitch for talks (between India and Pakistan) and amicable solution of the issues," said the PDP sources. |
