Udhampur: PHC Thial craves for staff, medicines | | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 2: The tall claims of Government about improving and providing health care facilities in the State fall flat if one visits Primary Health Centre (PHC) Thial of block Majalta in Udhampur. Most of the sanctioned posts are vacant while the centre is running short of medicines. The PHC has a sanctioned strength of four doctors including three assistant surgeons and a dental surgeon, and an ISM doctor. However, the first four positions stand vacant and it's an ISM doctor who runs the centre. "This PHC has no laboratory services while medicines are seldom available. One wonders how did the Government give the status of PHC to this dispensary," said a local resident Ranjeet Singh. He said even for a toothache, one has to cover several miles on foot and later 2o kilometers by bus to reach Majalta. "I used to visit the PHC, but a nurse present there asked me to go the district hospital," Singh said. "Being poor people, we don't have money to visit hospitals which are far away from our place." "If Government has established the health institution then it's their responsibility to provide adequate manpower," he said. Castigating the Public Works Department (PWD), Singh said that in 2009 the department started construction work on two storey building for the PHC. Till date only first floor stands completed, even as the deadline of March 2015 is over. Notably, the PHC Thial caters to more than 10 thousand people. An ISM doctor along with two paramedical staff have been running the PHC, and even for simple tests like X-ray, people have to rush to the district hospital or GMC Jammu. The Block Medical Officer Majalta didn't return repeated calls from Early Times for his comment. Executive Engineer, PWD, Rajesh Gupta, said the second storey of PHC Thial was completed and rest of the work would be completed too within a month. |
