Geelani's Hurriyat peeved at opening of NIA offices in J&K, threatens agitation | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 2: Hurriyat Conference (Geelani faction) on Wednesday threatened to launch an agitation in Kashmir if the state government allowed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to open offices in J&K. The NIA is mulling to establish its permanent offices in Srinagar, Jammu, Udhampur and in south Kashmir to "tackle anti-national activities," according to media reports. Warning the PDP-led coalition against allowing the NIA to set up offices in J&K, the Geelani faction of Hurriyat in a statement said the NIA's proposed move is a clear violation of the "special status" and constitution of the state and does not have any legal and moral justification. "If permission is granted for the permanent offices of NIA in the state, it will be resisted tooth and nail and we will launch a public agitation against any such move," the Hurriyat statement said. It alleged that NIA personnel locate phone numbers of financially sound people and then harass them on baseless charges and threaten to frame them in Hawala cases and then extract money from the people who get terrified by their threats. "We will not remain silent over this issue and if the state government does not fulfill its responsibility in stopping the direct involvement of NIA in the state, the people will be forced to come on the roads to protest against the terrorist activities of NIA," the statement said. Sources said the separatist fear that their activities would be largely curbed if the NIA sets up offices in J&K. They said the separatists also feel that NIA may handle their anti-India activities which includes shouting pro-Pakistan slogans and waving flags of Pakistan in their rallies with more strictness than J&K police. The NIA is already handling the Udhampur attack case. |
