100 SUVs: Amid 6 lakh jobless, Rs 9000 cr liability, financial crisis | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 5: The PDP-BJP government's so-called austerity measures have proved to be a big hoax just within six months of the coalition assuming office. The plethora of funds being spent for the convenience of ministers is seen here as a vindication of how helmsmen undermine and ignore woes of the masses who had voted to end the corruption culture that has destroyed the state. At a time when there are more than six lakh educated youth jobless in the state and when the state is reeling under economic crunch, thinking of 100 SUVs seems to be a bizarre move. As the opposition is sharpening its knives against the dispensation for failing to provide succour to the flood-hit people, experts are of the opinion that the SUVs would also add to the anti-incumbency wave in the state. "It's ironic that the government is purchasing luxury cars for the lawmakers when there is no comprehensive policy for ending unemployment and financial crisis," said Younis Shafi, a university student. "If the government continues to ignore the realities on ground, it would only entangle the governance further in the state," Shafi said. "Instead of mitigating the sufferings of the people who have witnessed the menace of corruption and misgovernance, the present regime is proving no different from its predecessor," said Amir Mukhtar, a columnist. "When the government was raising its pitch high for Rs 9500 crore liabilities of the previous government, how it could all of a sudden spent whopping amounts to purchase 100 SUVs for the ministers and legislators," asked Mukhtar. Notably, the present dispensation has chosen to go for the expensive SUVs at a time when victims of last year's devastating floods are craving for relief in the state, particularly in Kashmir Valley. The government, indeed, has to answer the logic behind enjoying all doles from the state exchequer, leaving the people high and dry. |
