Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 5: Gandhi Memorial College, the only college in Jammu affiliated with Kashmir University, is functioning without adequate faculty. According to students of Mass Communication and Journalism department, since the beginning of this year they have attended just a single class so far due to shortage of faculty. "Last month, the college administration conducted interviews for lecturer and selected a person who could not speak well. There was huge communication gap between teacher and students," said the students. "We brought this matter in the notice of administration which, instead of bringing some good faculty, replaced the lecturer with a diploma holder," said the students. "The replacement is although temporary, he is taking all the classes, despite only having a diploma. Ironically, they have also retained the selected lecturer to give an impression to the university authorities that the college has one permanent teacher," they said. The students also claimed that they had come to know that during interview many qualified and experienced persons had applied for the post. However, due to interference of some members of the Hindu Education Society of Kashmir (HESK), in connivance with Dean Colleges Kashmir University, the blue-eyed candidate was selected. "This is disgraceful that though the college charges us Rs 40,000 per semester, they take our studies for granted by appointing any layman as lecturer," said the students, adding that seeing the "as-if-we-care" approach of the college administration and Kashmir University, many students have applied for migration to other subjects. Meanwhile, sources said Prof Sunil Tickoo, who happens to be a professor at SPMR Commerce College but prefers to stay at Gandhi Memorial College as a member, has influenced the selection of the lecturer. "We had one candidate with PhD and five-year field experience, but unfortunately the college administration preferred to select a person who has had communication problem," said sources. AK Raina, secretary HESK, challenged the students' version and maintained that they have been misled. |
