Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 6: The announcement of the Government of India to implement the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme for the armed forces veterans has brought cheers to many retired Defense personnel, their widows and veers naris.
The ex servicemen were reported to be distributing sweets and greeting each other in the various parts of the state.
Large number of veterans also gathered at the BJP headquarters and were seen dancing to the tunes of drum beats and distributing sweets.
The substantial hikes in their pensions would now enable them to lead a better life. He also thanked the government for announcing the payment of arrears to widows and war widows in one instalment only.
Brig Anil Gupta, a senior veteran from Jammu thanked the government for undoing the injustice meted out to the veterans ever since independence and granting the much needed One Rank One Pension, which would ensure that no junior receives more pension than his senior.
He also hoped that the government would sympathetically and favourably consider the certain contentious issues like non-grant of OROP to those pensioners who sought PMR, equalisation after two years instead of five years and including representatives of the veterans in the one man commission appointed by the government.
He also warned certain political parties like Congress to not to play politics on this emotive issue and refrain from politicising the armed forces of the country.
Another senior veteran from Jammu, Col. Uttam Singh, was highly praiseworthy of the NDA government led by Narendra Modi.
He said that with this announcement injustice done to them by the Congress led Indira Gandhi government in 1973 has been set right and justice delivered to them. He expressed hope that the decision will also motivate our state government to look into the long pending demands of the veterans and resolve them.
