NC joins separatists for Sept 7 protests against GoI | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 6: Even as Kashmir Inc has announced to observe September 7 as "Black Day" against the Centre for failing to rehabilitate flood victims, it has got support from unexpected quarters. Opposition National Conference and separatists have supported the protest call, putting the State Government on tenterhooks amid apprehensions of violence on the flood anniversary. Official sources said the separatists are "hell bent to derail prevalent peace through widespread protests on the day." The NC on the other hand is feared to fuel any protests through its party workers, who have been allegedly assigned the task. The sources said historic Lal Chowk was feared to witness large scale protests, to avert which, restrictions are likely to be put in place. Police sources said Kashmir Economic Alliance Chairman Yasin Khan who also heads Kashmir Traders and Manufactures Federation President is lobbying for a massive gathering at the historic Lal Chowk on Monday. "He has even circulated messages on social media seeking public participation in the way of Allah," said a police official, adding that the event scheduled to be held between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM was expected to attract thousands of people. "It's going to be difficult to control such a huge rush that too when separatists have supported the call," the police official said pleading anonymity. While business community is up in arms against the Government for failing to rehabilitate the flood victims, the NC and separatists find it opportune time to grab public support. The NC has announced its full support to the "Black Day", whereas senior separatist leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammed Yasin Malik are also supporting the call. Sources said separatists are planning to take out processions and stage roadside protests in the summer capital on the day. "We have reports that they will try to disrupt peace and this is something opposition will try to cash to gain public mileage," said a politician from the ruling Government. Sources said Omar Abdullah and some other senior NC leaders including Ali Sagar have started lobbying with some separatists so that major protests are held on the day of flood anniversary. Observers said National Conference can be the biggest beneficiary of the protests as it wants to get a chance to regain public support, which it lost in the last year floods, when Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister failed to manage the crisis. As of now, the NC wants to blame the ruling coalition. The NC has issued statement that PDP-BJP Government intentionally sabotaged the 44,000 crore flood relief package as proposed by the previous Omar led Government. For past two months, the PDP-BJP Government is expecting Rs 70,000 crore economic package for J&K to be used over next five years for development projects and also for flood affected and impacted people of 2014. Police is scheduled to host a late night meeting to decide future course of action. "It is a big law and order problem and thus needs a decision from highest quarters," said an official. |
