| Learners' pool to come up at M A Stadium | | | Shiv Dev Thakur

JAMMU, Sept 11 : The learners' pool was planned way back in 1993 when the first phase of three-phase swimming pool was thrown open by the then Governor, KV Krishna Roa. Then came the turn of former Sports Minister, Yogesh Sawhney, who planned to make the swimming pool an indoor facility in 2007, but still there were no arrangements for the learners.
Sources said that throughout its tenure the ex-administration of the sports council failed to stand on its words and to provide basic infrastructure to the sportsperson. Sources said that the recently renovated swimming pool, inaugurated by the Minister for Youth and Sports Jammu and Kashmir, last year after getting renovation for more than 3 years and investing around Rs 2 crores on the renovation of the eight-lane outdoor coaching facility in aquatic sports, the council failed to make swimming pool fit for the budding swimmers as well as the learner kids. Sources rued that earlier, sports council failed to provide the swimming pool for the learner, but used to stop the entry of the budding swimmers as the minimum depth of the pool for the kids used to be 3 feet but the pool at MA Stadium had minimum depth of 5 feets. Sources said that the newly framed body of Sports council is going to construct the learner's pool near the existing pool soon.
A parent of a swimmer while explaining the failure of the administration said, "Earlier, it was not possible for the kids to learn swimming as the minimum depth of the swimming pool at M A Stadium Jammu was about 5 feet which is quite dangerous for learners as well as the kids", but with the construction of new swimming pool for kids, the kids will get a platform to represent Jammu in Jr and Sub- Jr events of swimming, he further added.
Joint Secretary of the Sports Council Jammu, Shiv Kumar Sharma shared with Early times that the newly framed council has initiated the completion of many pending works. He added that the learner pool is going to be constructed soon and all plans are set to execute the tendering process in the regard of constructing the learner's swimming pool for kids. |
